Which plasterboard thickness to choose (9.5 vs 12.5 mm)
In short: 12.5 mm for partition walls, 9.5 mm for ceilings (lighter), and in bathrooms/kitchens use moisture-resistant boards (green). Where fire protection is required, use fire-resistant boards.
Reference table
| Thickness / type | Where it is used |
|---|---|
| 9.5 mm standard | Suspended ceilings, curved surfaces (lighter and more flexible) |
| 12.5 mm standard | Partition walls, wall cladding |
| 12.5 mm moisture-resistant (green) | Bathrooms, kitchens, wet rooms |
| 12.5 mm fire-resistant | Areas with fire-protection requirements |
For walls
The standard is the 12.5 mm board. For better sound insulation or strength, use double boarding (two layers per side).
For ceilings
The 9.5 mm board is often used — it is lighter and easier to handle overhead; 12.5 mm also works.
Bathrooms and kitchens
Choose moisture-resistant boards (usually green), resistant to condensation and damp.
